Christopher is a fun-loving and happy 7-year-old boy. He loves to swim, go to school, take car trips, visit the beach, and eat popcorn. At the age of 3, his parents were concerned that he was not beginning to speak and exhibited many typical autistic behaviors. After visits to his family doctor, Nationwide Children’s Hospital, and Akron Children’s Hospital, he was soon diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder, Speech Apraxia, and a Sleep Disorder. He still has little speech and relies on sign language and a communication device to socialize. He has many nights of interrupted sleep and meltdowns. This all causes daily issues of frustration, but he works regularly with a speech therapist, occupational therapist, and through family support to show continued improvement.
A service dog would be a great help to Christopher and could aid him and give him comfort during his times of frustration. It could also increase his independence with daily tasks while increasing his confidence and self esteem as he grows into a young man.
Christopher’s family is trying to do everything possible to give Christopher an opportunity for an independent, happy future as a young adult. They feel a service dog would be a great asset at this point in his life for development and could also be the special, loving friend that he needs.
