Devon is a funny, silly, loving 15 year old boy. He was born in 2001, at 35 weeks. At 20 months old, he was diagnosed as being deaf because he did not respond to human voice. His mother did not believe the diagnosis and insisted on further testing. Later, it was confirmed that his hearing was normal and that he had autism. Devon was 4 1/2 years old before he said his first word. He was diagnosed with apraxia which effects his motor planning. His language consists of short phrases and is often difficult to understand by unfamiliar people. Due to his autism and apraxia, Devon does not initiate interactions. He lacks independence, is socially immature and is anxious in unfamiliar surroundings.
Our hope is that an autism spectrum service dog would give companionship to Devon, lessen his anxiety and increase his awareness to his surroundings. We hope that Devon would gain independence and confidence with a sense of pride and accomplishments. Devon is a triplet and we feel that a dog, at this time in his life, would give him companionship as his brothers complete high school and get ready to go off to college. Thank you for helping make this dream a reality.
