Jack is 12 years old and was diagnosed with autism before his 2nd birthday.
Jack loves anything with an engine! Literally, anything. His favorite things are motorcycles and ATVs but he also loves helping with yard work when we are using the tractor or the leaf blower. He is a John Deere fan so you can’t let him see a John Deere tractor unless you are going to give him a ride!
Jack’s autism presents many challenges for him and a service dog will tremendously improve Jack’s quality of life. Jack has limited language and struggles with high levels of anxiety. As a result of this Jack is often very tense, vocally loud and has frequent meltdowns when he is frustrated. These behaviors severely limit his ability to participate in social situations, be out in the community or form friendships.
Jack’s anxiety is often triggered by changes in his routine: new people, different situations or unfamiliar places. The presence of a dog in his life will help to reduce his anxiety by having a constant presence with him all the time. Having that constant presence will provide him security and consistency which will help him be calmer at home and also enable him to get out in the community so he can experience much more of what life has to offer.
Jack has had intensive ABA therapy since he was very young and every year we have had to write a goal for him. We have written the same goal every year:
“We would like for Jack to be able to have typical social relationships, develop independence, and have a rich, rewarding life.”
We truly believe that a service dog will go a long way toward helping Jack achieve this goal!
